Allergy Awareness and How to Care for Your Eyes This Spring-Summer

At The Laser Center of Coral Gables, we know exactly how much discomfort spring can bring for people who suffer from eye allergies.  Knowing what causes these allergies and how to treat them effectively is important to maintaining good eye health and it can help you get a little more enjoyment out of this season.

What Causes Eye Allergies?

The symptoms you experience as allergies are a response by your immune system to contact with various triggers known as allergens, such as pollen, grasses, dust and pet dander.  When allergens are in your closed environment and they come into contact with your breathing passages and eyes, the body sends out a chemical called histamine to protect itself.  This chemical causes irritation, especially in the eyes.  Other symptoms include:

  • Itching sensation in the eyes, nose, mouth and throat
  • Red, swollen eyes
  • Headaches
  • Sneezing
  • Coughing
  • Excessive tearing, runny nose

How to Treat Eye Allergies

  • Be sure that it is an allergic reaction that you are experiencing.  Allergies can be seasonal or triggered by certain substances, but if you continually suffer from allergy-like symptoms, you may have dry eye syndrome.  Speak to your eye doctor about your symptoms to ensure that you are getting targeted treatment for the correct condition.
  • Antihistamine drops:  After an eye exam, your doctor will likely prescribe antihistamine drops, which are very effective and fast acting.  Using them every day during the spring will help keep symptoms at bay.
  • Start early:  The key to properly managing eye allergies is to treat them before they start rather than trying to play catch-up.  Spring starts earlier than many people think and pollens can travel for miles on winds from warmer areas, so it’s best to speak to your eye doctor in advance and prepare your eyes before the first allergens arrive.
