Laser Eye Surgery Is Ideal If You Have These Eye Conditions

Read about the common eye conditions people experience and how laser eye surgery from The Laser Center of Coral Gables can help:

  • Myopia:  Also known as near-sightedness, this very common condition occurs when your eye is too long for the curve of your cornea.  This condition causes closer objects to appear clear and objects that are further away to appear blurry.  LASIK gives exceptional results for patients with condition.  Up to 96% of our patients are seeing 20/20 or better after this quick, safe surgery.
  • Hyperopia:  This essentially is the opposite of myopia, as here the eye is too short in relation to the curve of the cornea.  This means that distant objects are seen more clearly than those up close.  There are a few different procedures that can be used to safely and effectively treat this condition, including Custom PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) and Custom LASEK (Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis).  If your prescription falls outside what is required for laser eye surgery, implantable contact lenses are a highly effective option as well.
  • Astigmatism:  This condition is the result of having a cornea that is egg-shaped and can occur in conjunction with myopia or hyperopia.  It causes images to tilt somewhat, as patients experience more than one focal point in the affected eye.  Custom PRK or Custom LASEK can be used to quickly correct this fairly common issue, as can a surgical procedure that implants Toric IOLs
  • Presbyopia:  As an age-related deterioration in vision, this condition tends to occur in people around 40 to 50 years of age.  Because this condition is due to the lens slowly losing its elasticity, there is little that current eye surgery can do for this condition.
  • Cataracts:  This is clouded or blurred vision resulting from the lens in one or both eyes becoming milky in color.  Often found in patients over 55, the actual cause of this condition isn’t medically known.  Should your cataracts impact on your daily life, surgery can easily correct the condition.  During this procedure, your lens will be removed and replaced with an intraocular lens implant.
  • Keratoconus:  Characterized by a progressive thinning of the cornea, this condition can cause vision distortion even with the use of glasses.  Specifically designed contact lenses can be useful however, severe cases will find the best results come from corneal transplant surgery.
