Quick, Convenient And Rapid Recovery: How Lasik Eye Surgery Has Changed The Way We See The World

Not that long ago LASIK eye surgery was still an unknown concept.  Glasses were the only well-known and available treatment for patients worldwide.  Modern advances made contact lenses the preferred alternative, largely due to size and convenience.  The revolutionary procedure called LASIK then took the Ophthalmologic world by storm.  Designed to treat refractive errors, improve vision and reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses, LASIK offers a permanent solution with little recovery time.

What is LASIK?

LASIK stands for “laser in situ keratomileusis.”  This procedure uses a laser underneath the corneal flap (in situ), to reshape the cornea (keratomileusis).  It takes less than 30 minutes to operate on both eyes and is mostly pain free.

The procedure

The LASIK procedure is a 3-step process, whereby the surgeon cuts the top layer above the cornea to create a flap.  This flap is then lifted and folded back to reveal the stroma, or middle section of the cornea.  A laser does the actual reshaping of the stroma by removing very thin layers of tissue with incredible accuracy.  The carefully repositioned flap is placed over the remodeled stromal layers and left to heal.

How long is the recovery process?

Recovery time varies from person to person, but under normal circumstances, vision should stabilize within the first week or two.  Proper post-operative care will minimize the risk of complications.
